  1. What is a 10-digit number?

A 10-digit number is a real, geographically-appropriate number listed in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) used by wireline, wireless, and VoIP providers. Until now, video phones used for VRS contained a proprietary proxy number mapped to a unique IP address associated with the customer. Now, each customer will have a real local 10-digit number similar to voice phones, cell phones, etc. (top)

  2. Why do I need to register for a 10-digit number?

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has mandated that persons using a Video Relay Service (VRS), like Snap!VRS, must obtain a new local 10-digit telephone number for their video phone. (top)

  3. What are the benefits of a 10-digit number?

Tired of using an IP address to call a friend who has a VP rather than an Ojo? Well, now you can easily call your friend just by dialing the 10-digit number - no more IP addresses! Plus, you will only have to give out one number to hearing people for call-backs. When the hearing person dials your 10-digit number it will automatically be routed to Snap!VRS - no more 800 numbers! Lastly, emergency services (911) will be able to automatically determine your location when an emergency call is made from your Ojo. This will keep you and your loved ones safer. (top)

  4. When do I have to register for a 10-digit number?

The FCC has mandated that all existing VRS users register for a 10-digit number by March 31, 2009. They have also allowed a permissive calling period where you can continue using your old number and still register for a new 10-digit number until June 30, 2009. (top)

  5. How will I be notified of my new local 10-digit number?

You will be sent an email with the new number. Also, your new number will be automatically loaded and displayed on your Ojo when it is ready. Your current Ojo number will be fully operational while you are waiting for the new 10-digit number. (top)

  6. Will I be charged a fee when I use my local 10-digit number to place long distance calls?

You will not be charged for long distance calls through Snap!VRS. However, hearing people who place calls through VRS companies will be charged rates based on their long distance carriers' plan. (top)

  7. Can I port a telephone number from my existing local telephone company, wireless, or VoIP provider?

Yes. However, before you port make sure you understand the porting process and implications as outlined in the following FCC consumer advisory: http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/numbport.html. (top)

  8. If I move, do I need to get a new local 10-digit number for my Ojo and what is the process?

If you move from one geographic area to another, you may not be able to take your number with you. This means you may need to request a new geographically appropriate 10-digit telephone number. (top)

  9. Can I request a specific 10-digit number?

No, not at this time. You will be assigned a number that is available from the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) that is specific to your geographic area. (top)

  10. Will Snap!VRS assign a 10-digit number to my other VP even though it is not an Ojo?

No. All VRS providers cannot currently support each others' video phones. Customers should be advised to get their local 10-digit number from the provider of their VP equipment. This will allow their VP equipment provider to support their equipment for maintenance and other service upgrades. (top)
